Rila Monastery and Stob Pyramyds The monastery “St. Ivan Rilski” was built on the site of the old marsh in 927 – 941 by Ivan Rilski in Rila Mountain. In the courtyard of today’s monastery, a defensive tower and a small church of a local feudal lord were erected in 1335. Tsar Ivan Shishman (1371 – 1393) issued a certificate in 1378, signed and stamped with a gold seal, which gave the monastery feudal possessions to 20 villages together with their lands. A tax register from 1520 to 1521 shows 21 monks living there, with its founding the monastery became a literary and educational center. In August 1778 the monastery was devastated by robbers and in 1818 the monastery was renovated thoroughly.
